Martin Amini Houston Concert reviews
Good Times...
Starting off, I've been a fan of Martin Amini for many years, but this was the first show I've seen. Bethel Woods in the summer is always a pleasure, as long as you don't get stressed with the gridlock of the local roads, especially when it is a sold-out crowd of 17,000. The weather was also very pleasing, setting the atmosphere with a full moon and a mildly cool summer night in Sullivan County.
The band began around twenty after eight with Proudest Monkey and then moved straight into Satellites. Some people got really excited because, from what I hear, he rarely plays this song. They proceeded to perform some new songs from their current album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. Overall, they played a good mix of old and new material spanning their long career. A few standout moments included the mellow interlude in Everyday when the crowd lit up with lighters chanting the backup vocals. During Two Step, Carter did a drum solo which I believe is also a rarity, just before seamlessly transitioning back into the song. I couldn't help but smile when the encore was Dave covering Tex Ritter's Rye Whiskey, with a fiddle addition by Boyd halfway through. Boyd and Jeff on horns completely stole the show with a few songs topping the 10 to 20-minute mark during the jam sessions. As a musician myself, I was in awe of their emotional, powerful, and dominating presence. The show finally wrapped up around a quarter after eleven with Tripping Billies and Squirm.
The 17,000 fans at this historic Woodstock location were an incredibly diverse group. I saw children as young as four or five and an eighty-something in a wheelchair. From hippies to punks, singles to couples, families to groups of friends, the crowd was energetic and vocal. Everyone I met, including the staff, was outgoing and pleasant. I even made new friends on the lawn, including two girls who had seen DMB a total of 8 times between them. Behind me was a guy who follows them from show to show and has been to around 60 to 70 concerts. According to the girls and that guy, this was one of the best performances they have seen.
Having attended numerous concerts across various genres over the years, this will be one of those perfect nights that I will still reminisce about when I am old and grey.
